Dreamland Nicholas Sparks Women’s Fiction 384 pages Published September 20, 2022 I read this book on my Kindle over a couple of days during the holidays and was reminded how good a story-teller Nicholas Sparks is. His stories have a sweet flow that hurries my reading. I’ve read most of his books through the years and even met him at a book signing a few years ago. He deserves all the success that has found him. I was around page 350 when I started congratulating myself for not shedding any tears as I tried to evaluate what made this book a good story. Too soon. I should have known the words of Nicolas Sparks’ would churn some tears out of my hardened heart before I was finished with the book. They flowed shortly thereafter. And I realized once again that’s what makes the story so compelling. We must feel their pain so we can rejoice when our characters solve their problems. In this case I saw that the story could have been resolved and closed at page 350 without this one last hiccup but it wouldn’t have pulled on my heartstrings so much. And I learned again a wonderful lesson for an author. Make those characters suffer as much as possible before giving them their happily ever after! Maybe I’m just not evil enough to my make-believe-people. I’m a natural born fixer and try to help others too much. I want everyone to be happy. My family. My friends. Even strangers I don’t know. But my characters? I’ll be working on ‘bringing them the pain’ in 2023! I hope you enjoy Nicholas and his books as much as I do. Happy New Year, Liz |
