Dr. Katie Cook is beginning her medical practice in a small town at the base of Clinch Mountain, TN, at the turn of the twenty-first century. She is healing from a past relationship while carving out an independent life for herself in these starkly beautiful but fragile mountains. She is befriended by Lovey Lephew, a strong woman about to celebrate 100 years of wisdom gained from a life of unimaginable stories and lessons learned from the dark hollows of this lonely, poverty ridden Appalachian mountain. As the women band together to protect their homes from a gang of drug dealers using the forested land for cover, they learn long buried secrets from one another that will change both their lives.

I worked on this book off and on (mostly off, I guess) for over a decade. Although it still isn’t exactly where I wanted it to be, I had to stop, publish and move on to the next project. This story was loosely based on the life of my grandmother, Lovely Olia Lephew Epperson, who died before I was born. Although the longer I worked on the book, the less I stayed true to her actual known story, I kept her name for the book. Lovey Olia fascinated me but as far as I know she was never called Lovey, only Olia. Katie is entirely fictional, even her name. I have used various names of places and family although all have been moved at will and nothing is as it really is. I hope you enjoy. This story has turned into a trilogy – and I’m avoiding writing the second book right now.
