The Last Caretaker

Jessica Strawser

Women’s Friendship Fiction

To Be Published December 1, 2023

348 pages

After a long avoided divorce, Katie is in search of a new beginning and quickly accepts a job as a resident caretaker at a nature preserve offered by her college friend Bess. It will be a new start for her and offers a welcome relocation across the country along with the job. She is confident she can do the work despite her lack of qualifications – especially the nature loving part.

From the beginning she senses something is not quite right. The last caretaker appears to have just walked away from the farmhouse without taking any of her personal effects. When a terrified woman arrives in the middle of the night asking for a safe place to stay, Katie realizes caretaking may involve much more than the park. The two women find a hidden space over the garage that appears to have been used in the past so Katie allows the woman to stay with the promise to try to help.

Along with learning about the other stops along this hidden path for abused women to disappear, she quickly becomes suspicious of everyone around her. It’s impossible to know who she can trust with this new knowledge about a hidden network of crusaders helping women find a safe life. Is there danger? And from who? The brooding groundskeeper, the daily hikers, even her friend Bess could be involved.

As Katie learns more about this shadowy network, she must overcome her fear and decide how much she is willing to risk to do the right thing.
