This is my favorite new book of the year. Sorry to keep changing it on you but I keep finding and reading great books. This one was published a year ago but took it’s time to find me. I’m so glad it did. Protagonist, Elizabeth Zott is a current day feminist trying to live in her 1960’s era world amongst her all-male colleagues, who have an unfair, sexist view of women. My favorite quote from the book is ‘Like most stupid people, Mr. Sloane wasn’t smart enough to know just how stupid he was.’

Her fellow scientists don’t view Elizabeth as being intelligent enough to even take up space in their lab. Except for Calvin Evans, a revered Nobel prize nominated scientist himself, who falls in love with her brilliant mind first. He sees her true abilities and great mind.

A few years later Elizabeth Zott finds herself alone as a single mother and the reluctant star of America’s most popular cooking show Supper at Six. Elizabeth’s technical references to her ingredients (“combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride”) is strange but interesting to a growing female audience. It turns out Elizabeth Zott is teaching women more than how to cook. Without trying, she is encouraging them to change their lives for the better.

Lessons in Chemistry is a very original novel and often made me laugh out loud.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Happy Reading,

Liz
