I saw a review in the newspaper for this book and was instantly hooked on the premise. Now I see it was a pick for the Good Morning America Book-club and has glowing reviews from big names authors of recent best-sellers.
This book was classified as a literary thriller, which I think just means its well written as well as providing an exciting and tense plot. Along with lots of heart and emotion, there are enough unexpected twists and turns to keep you reading. The story follows Micky, a cop whose beat is downtown Philadelphia, and her sister, Kacey, a drug addicted hooker who walks the streets. It opens with a new murder for Micky to investigate and we feel her immediate relief when she rolls the body over to discover it is not her baby sister. Not this time.
When Kacey goes missing, her sister worries she will be one more in a long line of prostitutes killed on the streets of this historic city. Or perhaps she will be next? Is there a serial killer on the loose?
A storyline that follows the painful home-life these girls endured, explains some of their choices. The memories are shared in between the action of the present day search for the killer. Will Micky find her sister and/or solve the case before it’s too late? There is no shortage of suspects or bad guys but I promise you will be surprised when all is revealed.
