Outlander Series

by Diana Gabaldon

First book published in 1991 with the ninth one expected this year.

Would you take a journey through time and space to be with the love of your life? And how could you decide between a solid 20thcentury man with all of the modern conveniences available and an 18thcentury hunk of love who could only offer to keep you warm and satisfied in desperate times of war and hunger and deadly illness.

When I finally finished writing my novel ‘Mountain Melodies’ at the end of June, I decided to treat myself with an evening of mindless TV viewing. My daughter had been begging me to watch the Outlander series for several years but I didn’t think I would like the time travel. I’m not usually interested in Fantasy but decided to watch the first episode. That was all it took. This great love story is no fantasy. The characters are so real, I’ve come to love them as if I walk beside them every day. The books are set in the beautiful Highlands of Scotland and later in North Carolina at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Some scenes are set right here in Alamance County.

I can’t speak with authority about the first books of this series because I haven’t actually read them. I watched it on Netflex, but after quickly binge watching all four seasons available, I’ve now read the next three books during the past month, a total of at least 3000 pages. These stories are epic! They are The Fiery Cross, book 5, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, book 6, and An Echo in the Bone, book 7. There is one more to read now and another on the way soon.

I’ll spend my time doing that as I await the arrival of the fifth season in February 2020.

About Diana Gabaldon

She has earned three degrees: a B.S. in Zoology, a M.S. in Marine Biology, and a Ph.D in Ecology. Obviously she didn’t need one in creative fiction.
